How to run OHS and fire safety training effectively

For training to work, routine in the way knowledge is passed on has to be avoided.

In brief

Effective safety training is built on the occupational risk assessment for specific workstations, not on a generic presentation. A blended model works best: theory delivered remotely with a knowledge test, practical exercises and the workstation briefing on site. Subcontractors should be trained on the same terms as own employees.

Occupational health and safety training, and fire safety training with it, are an unavoidable part of running any company. The problem is that in many plants they have become a ritual: the same slides, the same room, the same test filled in from memory. Formally everything checks out, and no knowledge is gained.

Start from risk assessment, not from slides

An occupational risk assessment must be prepared for every workstation, based on the results of testing and measurement of the physical, chemical and biological factors present in the working environment. That assessment should define the content of the training.

If excessive noise has been measured in a hall, hearing protection is what deserves the time — not another pass over general office ergonomics. Training disconnected from the realities of the workstation is a problem even when the paperwork is complete.

The blended model works best

  • Theory remotely — regulations, internal procedures, first aid. Staff work through the material at a convenient time.
  • Knowledge test — with results recorded, so it is clear who actually absorbed the material.
  • Practical part on site — extinguisher handling, evacuation, use of personal protective equipment.
  • Workstation briefing — always at the workstation. No platform replaces this.

The legal basis for the remote part is guided self-study using materials supplied by the training organiser, in particular via the internet — clarified in the regulation in 2007. We cover this in Online OHS training.

Do not leave out subcontractors

Every employee, and every subcontractor, must know the safety rules and the internal procedures in force at the company. In practice external firms are often the weakest link — they enter the site less frequently, know it less well, and frequently work on higher-risk tasks.

The answer is to cover them with the same induction as own staff, with records kept in one place. That is how our VITRIX platform works.

Measure whether it works

Effective safety management reduces losses caused by accidents, occupational illness and inadequate working conditions — and with that improves reputation and productivity. These are measurable: the number of near misses, test results, the time from hiring to clearance for work.

If none of those indicators moved after a change in how training is delivered, the change was cosmetic. See HSE outsourcing for the full service.

Frequently asked questions

The frequency of periodic training depends on the group of workstations — it differs for manual, administrative and managerial roles. The period runs from the previous session, and a change of workstation or working conditions requires a new workstation briefing.
